What to Expect the First Session
The first session is usually spent discussing your reasons for seeking services and answering a lot of questions. Dr. Sutliff will ask you about your current problem, past difficulties, medical history and social history (childhood, education, relationships, jobs, etc.) This "initial evaluation" will help to clarify your diagnosis for insurance purposes and will also be the beginning of developing a plan for your treatment.
Dr. Sutliff's primary specialty is the treatment of phobias, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, generalized anxiety (excessive worry), and post traumatic stress disorder.
Dr. Sutliff is also trained in Exposure with Response Prevention (ERP), the most effective behavioral treatment for overcoming OCD. ERP typically involves facing obsessive thoughts while not engaging in compulsions (such as cleaning, checking, over-analyzing, counting, or repeated reassurance seeking). Over time, ERP enables those sticky obsessive thoughts to "let go" and helps clients to live with the inevitable doubt and uncertainty of life more effectively.
In addition to using cognitive behavioral methods such as relaxation training & challenging negative thoughts, Dr. Sutliff utilizes several different approaches for overcoming trauma. For information on these therapies, see the links below:
Sessions are primarily carried out using a video platform. Face-to-face services are only available on a very limited basis.
